Spanish Damascene jewelry (known locally as damasquinado or damasquino) is a centuries-old metalworking technique where 24-karat gold or pure silver foil and wires are hand-inlaid into a darkened steel background. While the art form originated in ancient Damascus, Syria, it was brought to the Iberian Peninsula during the Moorish conquest in the 8th century. Over the generations, it was adapted by Spanish artisans and became globally renowned as a hallmark of Toledo, Spain, which remains the historic capital of the craft.
